My dissertation project sheds light on the normative and moral dimension of the mahalle in the current context of neoliberal urbanism in Turkey. I examine the neighborhood as a contested system of order, which has remained relevant in both the realm of every-day life and the political discourse.  Focusing on the interwoven relations of power in the two Istanbul neighbourhoods of Tophane and Kurtuluş, my research takes a comparative stance at the re-arrangements of how people of different origins, and migration trajectories live together in post-Ottoman Istanbul.
The theoretical frame of my dissertation ties in with while also expanding findings across the disciplines of urban anthropology, Turkish studies and political sociology.
