Heritage, be it artworks, antiquities, landscapes, sites, ancestral remains, or immaterial cultural expressions, has been increasingly framed as “cultural assets.” Its protection is likewise refracted through notions of property. Yet the destruction of heritage continues under the conditions of war and structural violence, proving that the dispossession of heritage is not limited to imperial and
colonial pasts but continues to shape the national and transnational governance of heritage. The workshop aims to explore how the knowledge production on heritage has come to be predicated on property relations and ownership, and the impasses this has created. Contemplating the property status of heritage as an interplay between possession and dispossession, it also seeks to envision different heritage futur.
