This presentation explores property ownership by non-Muslim communities in the transition from the late Ottoman Empire into Republican Turkey. It situates the ownership of communal property into the legal framework and traces the interrelationship between communal and state actors through various changes in the law. The talk focuses on the Greek communities in Istanbul.
