Historique Dès sa création, l’IFEA trouvait en l’Université d’Istanbul un partenaire solide et, auprès d’Halet Çambel et Kurt Bittel, pionniers de l’archéologie préhistorique turque, des alliés précieux. De ces premières rencontres dans les années trente naquirent des collaborations fructueuses entre le département de Préhistoire de l’Université d’Istanbul (fondé en 1950) et les recherches en préhistoire proche-orientale françaises. Dans la foulée des fouilles de Çayönü et dans l’effervescence archéologique que les projets de barrages sur l’Euphrate engendrèrent, Jacques Cauvin entreprit les fouilles de Çafer Höyük en 1979, avec l’appui du département de Préhistoire de l’Université d’Istanbul. This doctoral research addresses two core questions: How are urban contexts of intense migration led diversification socially and spatially experienced? How do changing conceptions and intensifying mixtures of difference relate to particular uses of space and senses of place? The context in which these questions were addressed is a locality of Istanbul known as Kumkapi that is intricately laden with distinct migration, diversity and informality histories, both historical and recent.
