Visual Semantics of the Early Turkish Republic
Representation and Power in Press Photography

In his PhD thesis, based at the University of Basel in the scope of the research project « SIBA. A Visual Approach to Explore Everyday Life in Turkish and Yugoslav Cities, 1920s and 1930s », Joël László uses press photography to analyze the political history of the early republican period. In what ways did the new regime in Ankara use press photography as a means of representation? How was the realm of the political conceived and conveyed visually? Which continuities and discontinuities can be established between the late Ottoman and the early republican period? These principal questions will be addressed in three different thematic approaches: « The cult of the leader », « parliamentary and participative forms of politics » and « dissidents and enemies of the Republic ». In his talk at the Institut français d’études anatoliennes Joël László will present examples from all three sections.
