The Uighurs of Turkey and Europe: Homeland, Identity, and Transnational Activism

Uyghur diaspora communities reside in a vast geographic area stretching from Central Asia to Turkey, from Europe to the United States and from Canada to Australia. Since the 1950s, they have engaged in a wide array of activities to transnationalize the case of Uyghurs in the homeland. This presentation will analyze how Uyghur diasporic identity and activities evolved through various mobilizing discourses, practices and frameworks effectuated by the elite. The activities of the Uyghur diaspora during three substantial time periods will be observed. Such an analysis will allow me to explain how mobilization practices and frameworks varied over time according to changing political opportunities. The article is based on fieldwork conducted in various cities in Turkey, as well as in cities in Germany, the Netherlands and France over a one-year period.
