« Preservation, Restoration, Valorisation: Diversities and Ambiguities of cultural heritage policies in urban contexts »

The Seventh “IFEA Archaeological Meetings” will be held next autumn on Tuesday 22 and Wednesday 23 November 2016.
In the frame of the “IFEA Cultural Heritage studies programme” launched in 2014, this year’s Meetings will be dedicated to cultural heritage policies in urban environments.
How to merge local society, inhabitants, local business, together with historical heritage’s rehabilitation and valorisation? How to distinguish between protection policies, economic growth, and tourism trade?

Our aim is to look at the diversity of researches in this field, paying particular attention to social and anthropological approaches, relationships, even conflicts, between material and immaterial heritage’s preservation.

The Meetings will also focus on conflicts of interest upon urban material and immaterial heritage, such as political, financial, or diplomatic ones, and conflicts involving local populations, and/or historical heritage.

Case studies will be presented from across Turkey, including cities praised by UNESCO for their Cultural Heritage values, like Diyarbakır and Gaziantep, comparative studies will be proposed, from Lebanon to France. The common thread will be to show both the complexity of cultural policies in a growing environment, the diversity of actors while enhancing the role of the civil society, through non-profit organisations and professional associations.
