French diplomatic influence
over ecclesiastical properties of the Roman Catholic church in Ottoman Istanbul

This study examines the degree of French diplomatic influence in Ottoman Istanbul in relation to the fortune of Latin Catholic churches and their ecclesiastical properties on the basis of Ottoman legal documents, such as imperial decrees (firmāns) which were given to individual churches and the capitulations (ahadnāmes) granted to France. The French ambassador served as a representative to the Sublime Porte for the Catholic religious and for their properties in matters such as the resolution of disputes, the presentation of grievances and the intervention with the Ottoman authorities in the preservation of ecclesiastical properties. He also played a central role in the negotiation of capitulations the privileges of which ensured French protection of the religious orders, their churches and institutions in Ottoman lands.
