The workshop focuses on the analysis of mortars and painted plasters in order to better identify construction techniques, supply networks, and proposing new dating criteria, in addition to architectural and stylistic analyses. It is based on the study of materials collected during the GABAR 2025 field campaign (mortars, plasters and pigments), survey project with the aim of better understanding the long-term occupation of western Cappadocia.

The research concerns a group of monuments combining built and rock-cut architecture, including in particular the Kızıl Kilise (Red Church) at Sivrihisar. The analyses (X-ray diffraction, thermogravimetric analysis and petrography) are mainly carried out in the laboratories of Koç University.

This workshop will bring together Prof. Jean-Michel Mechling (University of Lorraine), Alexandre Flammang (University of Lorraine) and Arnaud Coutelas (DTalents), and will combine theoretical and practical approaches, ranging from the preparation of thin sections to their microscopic analysis, with the aim of better understanding production techniques and traditional know-how.

The project is led by Dr Anaïs Lamesa (University of Edinburgh), in collaboration with Prof. Rana Özbal (Koç University) and Dr Ebru Kaner (Koç University). It is supported by ARPAMED, the University of Edinburgh/UKRI, the IFEA, Koç University, KUYTAM, the Laboratory of the History of Rhetoric, the Association of Friends of Cappadocia and DTalents.

At the intersection of research and training, this initiative aims to enhance our understanding of settlement dynamics in Cappadocia from Antiquity to the modern period, while contributing to the conservation and promotion of this exceptional cultural heritage.
