The centenary of the transfer of the French Embassy from Istanbul to Ankara invites us to examine the political, diplomatic, architectural and symbolic implications of this move. Initiated in 1925, this relocation took place in the context of the founding of the Turkish Republic and the geopolitical restructuring of the post-war period. It marked France’s recognition of the new regime that emerged from Lausanne, but also its adaptation to a rapidly changing capital city, the showcase of a modernising republican project. This symposium aims to examine this moment of transition at the crossroads of international relations, urban history, architecture and cultural exchanges. It will shed light on the forms taken by the French presence in a diplomatic and symbolic space undergoing redefinition.
