This presentation reflects on the achievements and rewards as well as challenges of an education mission rooted in the spirit of, and catering to, the Global South. The Doha Institute for Graduate Studies’ mission is to provide a graduate education in the fields of Social Sciences and Humanities, and equip students with the necessary skills that hone their academic skills and promote critical thinking. It fosters decoloniality as contextuality, focusing on knowledge production, mostly in Arabic, that is relevant to and rooted in the region that the Doha Institute serves. Yet that mission comes with its challenges. From disparity in undergraduate students’ university experience and training, to language barriers, to various faculty backgrounds and education traditions, educational missions in the Global South aspiring to offer a new model have much experimenting to do until they find a balancing act between visions and realities. This presentation seeks to engage the audience on the ways forward for educational institutions in the Global South by highlighting the mission of the Doha Institute and its achievements and challenges.
