This paper will present transformation of the rural space based on the findings of the research project “The Socio-economic and Cultural Transformation of Rural Space: Modernising and Disappearing Traditional Spaces and Meanings”[1]. The main argument/problematic of the research is how the villagers cope with the substantial modernist ideological discourse of “unavoidable end of the village”. A considerable majority of the villagers believe and/or are convinced that “one day the villages and villagers will disappear”; however, there is also a strong minority of villages trying to develop new ways of challenging to this “destiny” and shows success. Their success is not only in “surviving” but in finding and inventing new tactics in order to create a new way of life in the villages.
According to the research findings, rural socio-economic and cultural transformations depend on multiplicity of factors which arise indifferent forms. From economic perspective, the impacts of land quality and size, irrigation, agricultural products and non-agricultural income types, agricultural mechanisation and other technologies on total rural income level and economic changes are examined. From spatial perspective, interaction with cities, non-agricultural activities in rural, spillover effects (cultural, economic and political) from city and abroad on rural life and space are questioned. Additionally, the effects of education, remigration, distance /proximity to city, media and development in rural on the changing features of rural life and settlements are investigated. Within this framework the rural gender question is also examined through: women’s participation in agricultural and non-agricultural activities and decision mechanisms, women’s aspirations and experiences of staying / leaving village, and women’s experiences of village habitus in terms of subordination and resistance.
[1] This project is founded by TÜBITAK with 114K145 project number. The presented findings are based on the qualitative research conducted in 2015. A total of 60 focus groups were conducted (group of 30 women and 30 men) in 30 different villages located in 30 different cities which are representative regarding 26 statistical regions and in Turkey. In 2017 the second step will be achieved by conducting the face to face interviews with rural households.
