The draft to be submitted reports the first findings of an ongoing PHD research in Anthropology. Ethnographic fieldwork is carried out since October 2013 among Christian religious groups in Istanbul. Our main problem is to understand how pentecostal organizations conciliate both global presence and local anchorage. This involves networks of religious actors we depict as immigrants and/or autochthons, drawing attention on their singular approaches of thereness and hereness. We will first propose a typology for pentecostal churches in Istanbul, based on the way international migrants take part within the division of evangelical labour. Finally, we wish to underline the diverse religious meanings given to migration paths inside churches, asking whether it shapes representations of the territories’ identities, and interplays with migration projects.
This working-paper is not intended to give rise to a publication. We wish the discussion to help us finding appropriates methodological and theoretical perspectives for the coming two years.
