The School of History is seeking to appoint two Research Fellows on the research project “The Islamisation of Anatolia, c. 1100-1500” (ERC FP7 grant 284076).

You will possess a PhD in an aspect of pre-modern Middle Eastern/Islamic Studies and have a good knowledge of Persian and/or Ottoman Turkish and experience of working with Islamic manuscripts.

Your principal duties will be to produce a research monograph on any aspect of the spread of Islamic religion or culture, broadly interpreted, in Anatolia and/or the Ottoman lands prior to c. 1500; to assist in the collection of codicological information on Islamic manuscripts from Anatolia and the Ottoman lands prior to c. 1500 for inclusion in a database which will be one of the project’s outputs; and to assist in the administration of the project through the organisation of workshops and the publication of their proceedings.

The posts will be available for four years from 1 September 2012 (start date negotiable but to start no later than 1 January 2013). Applications from scholars with backgrounds in history, literature or religious studies are equally welcome.
