ARCHAEOLOGY OF HATAY AND ITS VICINITY THROUGH THE AGES
INTERNATIONAL SYMPOSIUM

Thema: Throughout its occupational history, Hatay, located on the corner of Northern Levant which is the end Mediterranean coast of Turkey, acted both as a buffer zone and provided connectedness with far-flung regions and being home to many cultures and civilizations. Located at the conjunction point of distinct civilizations it provided a passageway for Anatolian highlands to the north and the Syrian plain and Palestine to the south, Upper Mesopotamia to the east and Mediterranean coast to the west. The geographical position and natural sources of Hatay provided suitable living conditions for human from the Paleolithic to present. The archaeological and historical significance of the region in the wider setting of the Near East and the Eastern Mediterranean contexts has been well defined by the results of the archaeological researches in Hatay since the beginning of 1900’s. The recent investigations are providing a wide range of datasets at the micro and macro scale answering the questions of the settlement history of the region. The recent archaeological results from surveys and excavations conducted in Hatay and its vicinity (Eastern Mediterranean-Euphrates river valley) has added new perspectives starting from the beginning to the classical and Islamic periods.
 
In this framework Mustafa Kemal University, Department of Archaeology organize an International conference entitled “Archaeology of Hatay and Its Vicinity Through the Ages”. Regarding the excavations and surveys carried out in the region from the beginning to present, the Symposium aims to provide a platform to scientists for discussing and sharing their results of the researches. A special section will be given to Hatay from archaeological and historical perspective.

Date: Symposium will be planned before the international symposium of the excavation and survey results meeting which are organized periodically every year by the Ministry Culture and Tourism (at the last week in May). Exact dates will be announced to participants depends on this symposium’s date.   
 
Place: Mustafa Kemal University in Antakya-Hatay.
 
Language: Turkish, English, German, French.
 
Papers: The submission of entries, accompanied by the title of the paper and brief abstract (max. 250 words) should be sent via e mail or mail to the communication address written below. Papers should not extend than 20 minutes.
A special volume will be published following the symposium. The deadline for abstract is 31st December 2012.
 
Accomodation: The transfer and meal expenses will be covered by the symposium organizers, but the accommodation and travel expenses belong to the participants (individual reservation). Alternatively hotel and university options will be announced in second call.
